At Concept Engineering, you work on distilling technical challenges to their essence. You participate in discussions with users to understand their needs and help define the project scope from the beginning. You take ownership of your own technical discipline within projects, ensuring that your expertise is applied from the earliest phases to create sound and innovative solutions.

Within your field, you play a central role in analyzing problems and developing appropriate technical responses. You'll work alongside experienced colleagues who have extensive networks and specialized knowledge. By collaborating with them and contributing your technical insights, you'll help translate ideas into well-founded business cases and develop your understanding of conceptual engineering.

As a concept engineer at Tata Steel...

• You'll analyze project requirements to understand the technical challenges and contribute to determining whether current solutions are appropriate or if alternatives should be explored.
• You'll focus on your own technical discipline, applying your expertise to develop fit-for-purpose solutions and acting as a key specialist within multidisciplinary project teams.
• You'll develop fundamental engineering documentation, such as Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Heat & Material Balances (HMBs), and layout plans for your assigned work packages.
• You'll perform technical calculations and simulations in specialized software like Aspen/Hysys and FluidFlow to evaluate technical feasibility and support decision-making processes.
• You'll collaborate with experts from various disciplines within the organization, participating in cross-functional discussions to ensure technical alignment and feasibility of proposed solutions.

You’re someone who enjoys diving into complex challenges within your own field and finds satisfaction in working toward practical, high-quality solutions. You take a structured approach to your work and are eager to grow your expertise in a specific technical area. You’re curious, open to learning from others, and motivated to contribute to meaningful change. Additionally you have:

• A Bachelor's degree in a technical field.
• Some experience (2-5 years) in an engineering role, preferably with exposure to the steel industry or similar industrial environments.
• A strong foundation in your technical discipline with the ambition to become an authority in your field.
• The ability to work methodically and deliver high-quality technical documentation.
• Good communication skills that allow you to effectively collaborate with colleagues and stakeholders.
• A curiosity-driven approach to problem-solving and a desire to learn from more experienced engineers.

• A monthly salary ranging, depending on education and experience, between € 4.193,42 and € 7.409,08 gross per month.
• A good work‑life balance thanks to a minimum of 26 vacation days and 11.5 ADV days, plus additional hours accrued through Tata Steel’s flexible hours scheme.
• Variable profit-sharing, a fixed year-end bonus of 2%, and 8% holiday allowance.

The Concept Engineering Department at Tata Steel IJmuiden plays a key role in shaping investment decisions for capital projects. Our mission is to lead the process for and ensure optimal project selection that aligns with our Clean, Green and Circular strategy.

We focus on identifying and validating opportunities, translating them into well-defined projects with clear scopes and solid business cases. In close collaboration with users, technical experts, and external knowledge partners (e.g. universities, TSL), we explore multiple alternatives and select the most value-adding solution.

Our team acts as a strategic think tank within the engineering organization. We are conceptual thinkers, facilitators, and challengers—engineers who combine creativity with technical and business insight. By asking the right questions and thinking beyond conventional solutions, we lay the foundation for successful project execution.

We work in two key phases:

•    FEL 1 Appraise opportunity: Define the problem, assess feasibility, and identify viable alternatives.
•    FEL 2A Select scope: Evaluate those alternatives and select the best one based on criteria like cost, technical fit, and sustainability.
